Common Questions
Everything beginners ask us
You need to be comfortable in water, but you don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer. If you can tread water and swim a short distance, you’re good. Remember — scuba gear does most of the work for you underwater. Your instructor will assess your comfort level and work with you at your pace.
Completely normal — and our instructors hear this every week. Our team specializes in working with nervous beginners. You’ll start in a calm, heated pool where you can stand up at any time, and your instructor will never rush you. Most students say the nervousness disappears after the first few minutes underwater. If you want to test the waters first, our $50 Discovery Dive is perfect.
With a private course, you can be certified in as little as 3–4 days. Group courses typically take 1–2 weeks. There’s about 16 hours of classroom and pool training, plus two days for 4 open water checkout dives. The online portion is self-paced, so you can take as long as you need.
No traditional exams. There are some online quizzes as you go through the material, but the SDI method focuses on hands-on learning rather than memorization. Most of your course time is spent in the water building real skills — not sitting in a classroom.
SDI (Scuba Diving International) is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing dive certification agencies. Your SDI certification is recognized and accepted at dive shops and resorts worldwide — just like a PADI card. It never expires.
People of all ages and fitness levels learn to dive. The minimum age is 10, and there’s no maximum. You’ll fill out a medical questionnaire before starting — if you have certain health conditions, we may ask you to get a physician’s sign-off, but this is standard and most people are cleared without issue. Scuba is a surprisingly relaxed activity; it’s more about breathing control than physical fitness.
All scuba gear (tanks, wetsuit, regulator, BCD, etc.) is included in your course fee as a rental. The only personal items you need are a properly-fitted mask, snorkel, and fins — because these need to fit your face and feet specifically. Our pro staff will help you choose the right ones, and all students get a discount in our shop.
Yes! You can complete your classroom and pool training with us in Utah, then do your open water checkout dives at a dive shop at your vacation destination. We’ll give you a referral form to take along. It’s a great way to get your first ocean dives on a tropical trip.
